Rebuilding Homes; Restoring Hope
A powerful 5.8-magnitude earthquake jolted several cities and northern parts of Pakistan on Tuesday 24th September 2019. The tremors lasted for 8-10 seconds.
The tremors were felt across Northern Punjab in particular the area Azad Kashmir close to Mirpur. “The quake was 10 kilometres deep and was felt in most of the Punjab province, some parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The worst hit was Mirpur, Azad Kashmir,” chief meteorologist Muhammad Riaz
SKT Welfare’s team have performed an assessment; many homes in remote areas around Mirpur, have been decimated by the earthquake. Agencies have stepped in, in the interim and distributed tents, food and water. However this is not a long- term solution, with winter looming the tents will not be enough.
SKT Welfare with your help has started working on the ground and will endeavour to rebuild 50 of the demolished homes in some of the poorest areas surrounding Mirpur – Kikri, Saahing Hill, Banni. Our team on the ground is identifying the families, which need most help.
The total cost of building one home - £1850
Which will provide a single level home for 4 to 6 people with a kitchen, bathroom, storeroom, access to safe water and gas.
The cost of the rebuild will be minimised by; ‘reclaiming, recycling and re-using’ bricks and useable materials from the original structure.
It will be a solid brick home, ready for the harsh winter. Together we are ‘rebuilding’ the earthquake zone and lives.
The Prophet Muhammad (s) said,
“None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.” Bukhari and Muslim.
